Hey guys! In today’s blog post, I’ll be talking about how artificial intelligence has been incorporated into the skincare industry. Everyone reading this has different wants and needs when it comes to their skin, whether that be to smooth out skin texture, even out skin tone, clear acne breakouts, redness or pigmentation, everyone has areas of concern with their skin. (Boots, 2020) www.boots.ie/skincare-beauty-advice Traditionally, addressing issues like the ones I mentioned can be costly due to trips to doctors, dermatologists, beauticians and estheticians. Artificial intelligence has started to play a huge role in personalized skincare recommendations and diagnosis of skin conditions. One skincare brand that has incorporated artificial intelligence into their business model is French company La Roche Posay. They are owned by parent company L’Oreal and they have invested heavily into artificial intelligence. They recently launched the La Roche Posay Skin Scan App. This app was created to “build the most accurate and innovative algorithm by bringing together dermatologists from around the world to analyze thousands of images of men and women with different skin types and levels of acne severity.” (Laroche-posay.ie, 2020). The app works by taking pictures of the users’ skin and then analyzing the number and size of blemishes to work out the severity of the skin condition by comparing them to cases embedded in the algorithm. The app then recommends suitable products and provides links to purchase them directly from the app. (Google.com, 2020) https://sg.spotscan.com Another company that has used artificial intelligence to sell personalized skincare products is cosmetics company Shiseido. They have launched their own artificial intelligence called Optune Skincare. Similar to Spot Scan, Optune uses an algorithm to analyze skin data, environmental data and sleep data to recommend products to the user. It is a subscription service and each month five “optune shots”, small cartridges filled with product are sent to customers based on their skins needs. (Shiseido Co. and Shiseido Co., 2020). These apps have simplified skincare for consumers and have eliminated the chance of buying unnecessary product. I don’t know about you guys but I would love to have personalized skincare sent me to each month and everyone here at the Beautai Blog think this is something to watch out for as we enter this new decade.
