L’Oreal formed a team back in 2012 to focus solely on where beauty and technology meet, just like us here at Beautai! After doing some research in the developments of the hair industry, we found that L’Oreal have been innovative and creative for quite some time. The L’Oreal team operates a technology incubator of their own, where they put in lots of committed and dedicated hours to follow the progression of technology and beauty. One of the fascinating products that L’Oreal created was the Smart Hairbrush, in partnership with Withings and Kérastase. The target market for this brush was simply for those who ‘want to reduce bad-hair-days’. (Forbes.com, 2020) The brush has been designed to be compatible with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The brush also uses a conductivity sensor, accelerometer, microphone and even a gyroscope! I personally find it very interesting how all of these elements have found their way into the standard hairbrush. These brush elements gather technical insights to form algorithms that pickup details about the user’s hair to recommend suitable products relating to the best way the individual can care for their hair! (Forbes.com, 2020) The L’Oreal Smart Hairbrush detects whether it is brushing through dry or wet hair too. Each bit of information the hairbrush collects transmits it to the L’Oreal app, detailing its finding just from a few strokes of your hair. The brush uses a small microphone to pick up the sound of the hair running through the brush. The main things the brush recognizes are split ends, fizziness, dryness. The brush also records brushing patterns to accurately identify hair condition. (Morby, 2020) ![]() (Morby, 2020) Another startup company Prose have formulated their own unique algorithm to customise hair care products. As mass produced shampoo is ‘catered to everyone but benefits no one’ according to the Prose website, they decided to create a formula unique to the consumer! I decided to give the consultation a go, here’s what I found: Firstly, I made my own account, which gave me access to a questionnaire to find out more about me. I was asked my age range, my hair’s natural texture, length, its condition, thickness, the width of my hairs split (random), do i have much hair fallout, how often it gets oily, do I experience dandruff, the condition of my scalp, and a lot more of this nature. Finally, I got to choose a fragrance. This gave me my results, apparently i have ‘100/100% damaged hair’ … not going to try to sound offended here :) . So, this has been my experience with Proses advancements in technology, the survey was interesting and I would love to give their products a go! (However, these might only be sold in the US). (Prose.com, 2020) So L’Oreal and Prose have stepped up their game in A.I. technology what will the future bring?! Stay tuned to our next blog posts! Bibliography
